The network pays for useful output, and something has to judge what useful means

Bittensor is a set of subnets, each one a competition: participants submit work, other participants score it, and the emission is split according to those scores. That scoring mechanism is the load-bearing part of the design and the part hardest to verify from outside. A price tells you what the market thinks of the whole arrangement; it tells you nothing about whether any individual subnet is producing work anyone wants.

Emission is capped and halves, which puts a bitcoin-shaped schedule on an AI network

Total supply is fixed and the rate of new issuance falls by half at intervals, in the pattern bitcoin established. That is an unusual combination: the asset has the monetary schedule of a commodity and the cash flow story of a compute marketplace. People arguing about it are often arguing about different halves, which is worth knowing before you read any target quoted elsewhere.

Subnet tokens changed what holding TAO means

Each subnet now has its own token, and TAO can be staked into them rather than only into the root network. That moved the asset closer to being an index of the subnets than a single claim, and it means two people describing their TAO exposure may hold quite different things. The perpetual above is neither of those: it tracks the TAO price and nothing beneath it.

What this price is not

A cash-settled contract on one venue at page render. It carries no stake, no subnet allocation and no share of any emission. Funding is shown per interval, not annualised.
