Avalanche runs three chains with different jobs, and only one of them is the one you use

There is a chain for exchanging assets, a chain for coordinating validators, and a smart contract chain that runs Ethereum tooling unchanged. Almost all activity a user sees sits on the third. This is unusual, and it matters for reading any activity statistic about the network, because a figure quoted for one of the three says nothing about the other two.

Fees are burned, so usage removes supply rather than paying a validator

Transaction fees on the contract chain are destroyed instead of being handed to a block producer. The effect is small at current volumes and it is often quoted as though it were large. If you want to form a view on it, the figure to find is the burn over a month against the staking emission over the same month, not the burn on its own.

Subnets split activity off the main chain, which cuts both ways

Anyone can launch an independent network that uses Avalanche validators and its own rules. That is how the chain courts institutions that need their own environment, and it is also why headline activity on the public contract chain can stay flat while the ecosystem grows. Neither the chart nor the volume figure on this page sees any of it.

What this price is not

A cash-settled perpetual on one venue, quoted at page render. No AVAX changes hands, there is no staking reward attached, and the funding figure is per interval rather than annualised because the venue's interval is not published in the feed we read.
