An integrated major is not a bet on the oil price

Exxon produces crude, refines it and sells chemicals, and those three earn on different spreads that frequently move against each other. A refining margin can widen as crude falls. This is why the share regularly fails to track the oil price on any given day, and why using it as a proxy for crude leads people astray.
