Subscriber numbers stopped being the story, and then partly became it again
For a decade the share moved on net additions each quarter. The company then stopped reporting them, pushing attention onto revenue and margin, which is a slower and less dramatic signal. Password sharing enforcement and an advertising tier put growth back in the picture through price and mix rather than through headcount. That shift is why older rules of thumb about this stock mislead.
Content is capitalised, so profit and cash diverge
Netflix spends cash making programmes years before the accounting recognises the cost, which means reported profit and free cash flow can point in different directions for extended periods. Anyone comparing it to a software company on margin alone is comparing two different things. It is also why a single strategy announcement can reprice the share more than a quarter's results do.
