Thin margins make small operational changes large

Walmart earns a low single-digit net margin on enormous revenue, so a change of a few tenths of a percent in gross margin or shrink moves profit by a wide relative amount. This is why a retailer with utterly predictable sales can produce a violent earnings reaction. The realised volatility above is usually modest between reports and spikes around them; the position in the seven-day range tells you which side of that you are on.

Groceries bring the traffic, advertising brings the margin

More than half of US sales are grocery, which is the lowest-margin category in the shop and the reason people come in weekly. The profitable growth story is elsewhere: advertising against that traffic, marketplace fees and membership. Reading this stock as a bet on consumer spending misses that the mix is shifting underneath the revenue line.
