Zcash price, live, and the shielded pool nobody quotes

The zcash price on this page is a live perpetual contract price read from the order book, on an asset whose defining feature, a shielded pool that hides balances, is invisible in every price quote including this one.

Read from the exchange as this page rendered. A perpetual contract on ZEC, quoted on a venue where every position is fully visible, on an asset built so that holdings need not be.

Zcash has two kinds of address and the price knows about neither

Transparent addresses behave like bitcoin's and can be read by anyone. Shielded addresses cannot. The split between the two is the whole point of the asset, and it does not appear in a price, a volume or an open interest figure. Anyone drawing conclusions about adoption from the number above is reading a market's opinion, not on-chain behaviour, and on this asset the on-chain behaviour is deliberately unreadable.

Why a privacy asset trades heavily on derivatives

Several large exchanges have limited or dropped privacy assets in various jurisdictions over the years, which pushes demand toward instruments that provide exposure without custody. A cash-settled perpetual is exactly that. The 24 hour volume above is frequently large against the open interest, which is the signature of an asset being traded rather than held.

The funding rate on a thin, volatile book

ZEC's book is smaller than the majors and its moves are correspondingly sharper. Funding can swing hard and stay there, and on a thin market that cost compounds faster than the position's edge in many cases. The figure above is per interval, and annualising it in your head before deciding whether a carry is worth holding is the arithmetic that stops a good idea becoming an expensive one.

What this price is not

It is not a spot quote, and it gives you no claim on any ZEC, shielded or otherwise. It is a cash-settled contract price from one venue at page render.
